4 X 4 Shoot Information
What is it?
On September 19th, after we shoot 4 short stages at our Gridley Range, the 4x4 shoot will begin. Everyone who wants to enter will be fairly teamed with one other shooter to form 2 person teams . Folks wielding a .45ACP (big holes, perfect for "sawing") will be teamed with someone shooting a smaller caliber (.38, 9mm, 40, 10mm, etc). Each team will stand 7 yards from an upright 4x4 post and at the signal, everyone will draw and commence to "saw lumber" by firing at a horizontal line painted on their team's post. The first team cutting the post off with no splinters more than 2 inches remaining above the line, wins that round. This is a single elimination tournament, with 3-4 teams shooting at a time. Entry is FREE and the winning team takes home some nice trophy plaques. Here are last year's results.
What's it like?
Its a blast!
(Pardon the pun). Competitors are shoulder-to-shoulder, so hot brass is flying,
timber is splintering, there's smoke and dust , and it's LOUD! The winners
of this event cut a zipper across their post, so accuracy is paramount.
In the semi-final
round, it was a tie but one post left a large sliver sticking up (not
finished per our 4x4 rules). In
the Final Round, Mark Barr and William Carter managed to prevale. Accuracy
and the luck of the draw on post quality are equally important.

Are there rules?
All the regular IDPA rules apply, except that competitors are allowed to have as many magazine pouches or speed loaders as they like, as long as they are kept behind the center line of the body. Some folks prefer to wear a concealment vest (not required) and have extra mags in their front pockets. Caliber and gun limitations are the same as in regular IDPA competition.
Bring Lots of ammo and magazines. If you do well, you'll need them!
Last year, I brought 250 rounds...
